Socio-cultural sustainability; influence of tourism development on social and cultural practices of host communities. Minimizing the negative socio-cultural impacts of tourism; tourism practices that respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities.  Features of the bottom-up, community-based tourism development strategies; methods of involving and gaining the participation and support of the community members of a region in designing the development of a tourism destination. Managing the co-planning, co-monitoring, and co-controlling processes.

TRM 513  Anthropology and Tourism                                        (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Early and contemporary theoretical perspectives that distinguish the contribution of anthropology to understanding processes of tourism. The early impact studies with focus on gender, ethnicity, identity, heritage, authenticity, crafts; the contemporary studies on constructing people, places and things for touristic purposes.

TRM 516  Ethical Issues in Tourism Management                    (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Ethical issues and dilemmas facing managers in business life in the tourism industry.  Implications of the UN Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.  Ethical norms, values and principles in the business context; developing formal and informal initiatives, processes, and structures to deal with recent ethical problems at work.  Sustainability as a requirement of ethical business practice; environmental ethics. 

TRM 521  Destination Development for Sustainable Tourism        (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Characteristics of the destination as a tourism product; destination resources and attractors. Sustainable tourism destination; tourist behavior in the context of destination development; destination’s image, branding  and positioning; roles and responsibilities of destination management organizations; information systems for destination;  tourism destination networks.  Stakeholders, strategic alliances and public-private partnerships; cases of various destinations worldwide.

TRM 522  Environment, Sustainability and Tourism                (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Problems associated with the life-support systems and the environment. The role of human factor in changing the environment; interactions between tourism and the environment; analysis of relationships between the natural environment, the local economy, the local community and tourism.  Approaches in environmental planning and sustainable tourism management.

TRM 523  Tourism Policy and Planning for Sustainability       (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Tourism’s contribution to GDP, its multiplier effects, characteristics of employment and income generated by tourism.  Approaches and models concerning sustainable tourism planning; tourism policy making processes; stakeholder cooperation and involvement; role of public sector on policy and planning such as taxation, subsidy and regulation of the tourism industry for a sustainable development.  Evaluation of tourism plans and policies from local, national and international industry perspectives.  Comparative analysis of planning and policy approaches to tourism undertaken in selected countries and regions.

TRM 525  Sustainable Business Development                            (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Principles and features of sustainable business development and its impact on corporate performance; Crafting sustainable business strategies, balancing economic goal of profit and the wider economic, social and environmental values. Shareholder and stakeholder oriented models of the firm;"triple bottom line" (people, planet, profit) approach.  Sustainability reporting based on Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines.

TRM 526  Corporate Social Responsibility and Governance       (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Theory of the firm; the theoretical foundations and practical problems of corporate governance.  Role and function of the board of directors and the management; role of accounting, disclosures and audits; shareholder/stakeholder rights and responsibilities.  International corporate governance codes and corporate governance principles of Turkey.
 
TRM 531  Management of Tourism Projects                             (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Stakeholder analysis in private and public projects in tourism; private and public partnerships in international organizations.  Methods of collecting of project plan inputs; tools and techniques used in project planning; submitting the outputs of a project plan to viable stakeholders. Development of project scope, (work) breakdown structures, exploration of the impact of an increasingly complex business environment on project success.  Factors influencing project managers' adaptability to deal with unpredictability; focus on leading projects within tourism industry.

TRM 532  Sustainable Human Resource Practices                    (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
The effects of environmental change on organizations; the role of human resource management systems in managing and maintaining change.  Methods of improving organizational systems for sustained performance; developing organizational capability through learning, adapting, innovating while interacting with other systems in and outside of the organization. Introduction of models, tools and techniques with specific applications to organizations that operate in the tourism industry such as hotels, airlines and event organizations.

Meanning and role of of management in tourism organizations; comparative analysis of different approaches for tourism management. Impacts of values, attitudes, expectations, communication, power and politics within work organizations; organizational leadership for securing a positive work climate and creation of committed teams.  Management to promote sustainability and ethical organizational practices; analysis of management trends for tourism organizations with a critical perspective.

TRM 534  Consulting in Tourism                                                (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
Basics of consulting profession.  Issues related to the gap of consultancy services for tourism organizations. The role played by management and consultant in the process; identification and demonstration of essential consultancy skills (strategic thinking, leadership, effective planning, communication); different consultancy needs of a range of organizations; special areas where consultancy know-how can be used in tourism industry.

TRM541  Cultural Heritage Tourism                                         (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
The scope of cultural heritage tourism, cultural heritage conservation and management. Importance of developing and preserving cultural and heritage resources. The range of cultural heritage assets that can become viable tourism attractions and ways of linking quality cultural heritage tourism to community development; skills and roles of cultural heritage tourism professionals as they are related to the historic preservation field as well as the business environment with particular emphasis on marketing.

Principles of rural tourism, including the scope of rural tourism and the cultural significance of the countryside. The tourism resources of rural areas; the benefits and costs of rural tourism development.  Planning, marketing and management processes of rural tourism; factors that determine successful rural tourism development and management of tourism sites in environmentally and culturally sensitive areas.

TRM 543  Alternative Forms of Tourism                                   (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7

Nature, characteristics and scope of tourism industry. New forms of tourism experience such as ecotourism, agritourism, voluntourism, wildlife tourism, wine tourism, pop-culture tourism, poverty tourism, ghetto tourism, literary tourism, slow tourism, diaspora tourism, and faith tourism.  Integration of contemporary forms with sustainable tourism planning and management.

TRM 554   Research Methods in Tourism Management            (3+0+0)3  ECTS 7
An understanding of social science research methods and processes commonly used in tourism management research.  Introduction of research design, sampling methods, data collection methodology, data interpretation and analysis methods in tourism.  Use of different research methods in tourism management research.

TRM 556  Qualitative Research Methods                                   (3+0+0)3   ECTS 7
An overview of qualitative research methods and qualitative data sources; the design and practice of qualitative research; methods of inductive analysis of qualitative data including conceptual coding, grounded theory  and narrative analysis; discussion of research ethics, the politics of fieldwork, modes of validating researcher accounts and styles of writing up qualitative field research.
